The Economic Management & Research Unit (EMRU), previously named the Fiscal Policy Research Unit was established to conduct data-driven research into such matters related to the fiscal and macroeconomic operations of the Tobago House of Assembly in support of the broader financial management and policy implementation role of the Division of Finance and Enterprise Development. The highlights of the work of the Unit previously included; preparation of the Annual Budget Statement, the Tobago Social and Economic Statistical Digest, the Selected Statistics and Data Catalogue, Estimates of Tobago’s Gross Domestic Product, technical oversight for the development of the Comprehensive Economic Development Plan and the formulation of official reports for international ratings agencies and other multi-lateral organisations.

The Unit has been renamed and re-shaped to more comprehensively meet the requirements of its enriched mandate. The remit of the Unit has been decisively expanded to include investigation and analysis of developments in the local, regional and international environment with a view to providing informed policy recommendations, macroeconomic analysis and modelling, institutionalisation of the compilation of Tobago GDP data, evaluation and research of issues and opportunities surrounding labour productivity and competitiveness, inflation and price differentials, unemployment, development financing and sectoral development with strong emphasis on Tourism and Agriculture.
